A leading "Consumer" magazine rated the Schwinn 418 elliptical as their Best Buy in their January 2005 review (then reprinted Feb 07) Because of this review, the Schwinn 418 elliptical has been an extremely popular model on the market. Schwinn discontinued the 418 in October 07 and still leaves the 438 model available. The 438 offers a few more bells and whistles than the 418 at a very attractive price. People take the Schwinn products because they have a low starting ease of resistance, have the schwinn brand name, and was in consumer reports as a best buy. Most companies try to improve on their products. Schwinn has actually gone backwards. They are now making 2 more models labeled the 430 and 431. These models offer a smaller footprint with a lower price. Two things happen when you make the machine smaller and lower the cost; they loose their stability and quality. A red flag on these machines is that they only offer a 1 year electronics warranty. If you plan to use the machine, and want Schwinn, go to the 438.

Brand new from Schwinn for the 2006 season is the 438 elliptical. Most companies try to improve on a winning concept and sometimes fall short. Schwinn has had great success with their 418 elliptical because of the Best Buy review in a leading Consumer magazine. Rather than Schwinn improving the 418, they left it alone and came out with an alternative model called the 438.
